MY RUIN - "A Southern ℜevelation" - KKKKK

Husband and wife sludge metallers turn in their most personal work yet.

Necessity might be Plato's mother of invention but adversity appears to be the progenitor of darkly vehement passion. Anyone familiar with My Ruin formidable frontwoman Tairrie B will know she's always been able to whip up a shitstorm of anger with her acerbic pen and ground glass vocal performance alike. In the past this has been trained on concepts such as misanthropy and religion but here she takes a more personal tack.

The inspiration might be relatively prosaic (lets face it My Ruin aren't the first band to consider themselves to have been stiffed by former recorded company) but songs like Middle Finger and The Soulless Beast are transformed into tales of personal betrayal and imbued with a near biblical sense of wrath.

Musically, they're at their most focused and compact, eschewing the trackless swampland they've been know to traverse in favour of driving slabs of momentum and some of the sharpest, most serrated hooks they've ever set down. This all makes for one of the most vital and impassioned albums released all year and with the band still unsigned, they're making it available for free from their website. Only a fool would miss out

Ghosts and Good Stories is a significant release for My Ruin, it marks a decade of releases, of which this is the sixth album. As always it is unapologetic in its tone and never disguises its intent. Now recording as a two piece My Ruin are tighter than ever. The marriage – both musically and physically- between Tairrie B Murphy and Mick Murphy has culminated in My Ruin’s finest album to date. The intensity of two closely linked individuals explodes in a very controlled firework display of despise! Mrs M’s vocal outpourings of bile and hoodoo screams are perfectly complimented by the Sabbath drenched Southern sludge swagger of MM’s thick riffs and transcendental solos; this, along with the pummeling bass lines – heavy enough to blow the skin from your face - and the decimating drums create something awesome and beautiful!

The opening chords of ‘Diggin’ For Ghosts’ are so heavy you can feel the sweat being pulled from your brow. The immense doom of the intro howls with the midnight yearnings of a werewolf. This southern gothic soaked setting is perfect for the lyrics and delivery of Tairrie B’s purging of the soul in a grotesque tale of self-redemption; perfectly summed up in the line ‘If I kill all my demons – Will my angels leave me alone.'

The second track ‘Long Dark Night’ is, without competition, the heaviest tune on the album. Tairrie B screams and scolds the world of religion for its stagnating insomnia, the one that prevents the human spirit achieving atonement from past transgressions and past humiliations. The hoodoo voodoo sermon and deep riffs scream so hard that they tear deep into the soul and pump a floundering heart.

The track ‘Money Shot’ is a visceral attack on the weakness of woman in rock bands; those who allow themselves to be manipulated by the greed of an industry that is no longer governed by the artistic credibility of an artist but one governed by flesh equaling dollars. You can not help but feel this song is a sympathetic plea to the likes of Taylor Momsen, while at the same time a scolding from the high priestess of rock; a women who has never given ‘them what they need.’

‘La Ciudad’ screams with pure rock riffs in a requiem for Hollywood. The lyrics disclose the underbelly of a town that parades its Midas touch. This song openly shows the scars beneath the makeup of lies. The operatic guitar solo is so perfect in its grandiosity that it perfectly depicts the ‘town (that) has lost its shine’ – Tairrie B delivers the final line ‘La Ciudad de la Ruina’ (The city of Ruin) with a significantly mournful voice. A perfect executed track.

‘Deathknell’ closes proceedings; a dirge of bass and the echo of a guitar lead the exorcism of a doomed courtship and the subsequent resurrection from heartache. It does not promise an escape from the scars left behind, but relief from them by reflection. The albums finally ends fittingly with the exquisite dirge of Mick Murphy’s guitar.

G.&.G.S. is a beautiful offering to a loyal fan base. One final high point is the choral overdubbing on ‘Repose’ which hails a choir of fallen angels to deliver their deities blessings. Simply stunning!
Big thanks to Tairrie B Murphy and Mick Murphy for allowing me to use the exclusive photo of them ....... awesome couple who know how to ROCK! X

5/5 - Unstoppable Groove Meets Immovable Honesty!
November 23, 2010
By Rachel J. Lewandowski "RL" (Chicago, Il, USA)

Some bands refuse to evolve, remaining stagnant musically and lyrically from release to release. My Ruin has never been one of those bands. The husband and wife duo of Mick and Tairrie B Murphy has given birth to their most exciting album yet, thick with a southern groove that would make Down and COC envious.

From the opening track 'Diggin for Ghosts, with it's sinister guitar riffs and Tairrie's trademark spoken word style leading the way, to the mosh-pit worthy 'Long Dark Night', I highly recommend turning your speakers up to 11. The southern sludge of 'Excommunicated' is purely breathtaking, with the vocals switching between a venomous whisper and a full-fledged scream in a way that only Mrs M can make sound amazing. 'Abusing the Muse' is another stand out track, rich with vocal texture and dense guitar layering that, I suspect, is going to sound absolutely amazing in a live setting. 'Malediction' is one of those tracks that makes you feel like you just got hit in the face with a tire iron, and has the kind of guitar work that should make most musicians extremely envious. The closing track, 'Deathknell', is the ideal way to end this brutal masterpiece. The mix of spoken word and throaty screams, blended with the dark, sinister tone that Mick Murphy has set with the expertly crafted music, is both ominous and defiant.

Disregard the imitators, and stick with the original. This album will tempt you to max out your speakers and play every track on repeat.

5/5 - An American Haunting!
November 21, 2010
By Cloned Dodo (Herts, UK)

From the moment you hear the opening track on the latest offering from My Ruin you are taken on a journey. This is the bands 6th studio album and it just proves that My Ruin just get better and better. Each album seems to tell a story in the bands history and this album is no exception.
Recurring themes of religion, redemption, romance and the darker side of things are all present here however also is the anger at social and world injustices, remember this is coming from Tairrie B a woman who has never been shy at speaking her mind. With each scream, you can feel the truth behind honest lyrics such as:

"These streets are lined with lies
LA's an ugly face that wears a good disguise
This town has lost it's shine
The hills have desperate eyes"

Whilst Tairrie B Murphy may be the Queen of Screams and Mick Murphy a demon on guitar My Ruin are no one trick pony - far from it! There are parts of the album that let Tairrie's talent for spoken word shine and with Mick's soundscapes helping to set the mood help create a truly unique sound. If you haven't heard My Ruin before then for God's sake do yourself a favour and get this album. It's dark, brooding and yet delivers a punch to the gut in term of raw rock!

Prepare to be haunted!

Amazon.com Fan Review - Sam Murphy!

A very special [and personal] thank you to Sam Murphy [who has always been a huge supporter and champion of our band for many years now] for posting his thoughts about our new album on www.Amazon.com - You rule bro! xo

November 16, 2010
By Sam III (West Virginia, USA)

Such a crystal clear mix and brilliant sound. All the puzzle's pieces seem to fall into place. Deep and thoughtful lyrics that are passionately conveyed through a voice rivalling the very best of this genre, very driven, powerful and gripping, and consumed with contagious energy. Mrs. M has broken new ground, again. The instrumental clarity can be attributed to its singularity, which is defined by Mick Murphy playing all the instruments, as well as producing the record along with Josh Lynch, and both obviously doing so with acute, inveterate and caring ears.

My Ruin has a long and hard earned history of creating powerful and progressive music. G&GS is THE top of their heap, and for that matter the top of the whole contemporary metal heap. I dare call it the metal album of the year.

5/5 - Beautiful Brutal, it'll rip you a new one!

November 8, 2010
By Blueisis69 ( Urbana, Ohio USA)

I am a recently baptized fan of My Ruin, joined the metal flock just a few years ago...and I must say, 'Ghosts and Good Stories' is their uber child! I love this album; it has all the screams, roars, snarls, and spoken word, we love Tairrie for...and all the hardcore, sludgy, and bada$$-in-your-face riffs that we love Mick for! And let's not to forget to mention that Mr. Murphy played ALL the instruments and co-produced the album! {Mick is there ANYTHING you can't do?} There is soooo much metal out there to choose from, and My Ruin has found such a great formula, it works, it's good, and it's truth! This album shows how well Tairrie and Mick work together, and exactly what they are capable of. All the tracks are tight, and well written, and there is not a song I skip over like I do on most of my cds!

Overall, I was impressed! And for me not to change the cd in the car stereo for a month says something! All the tracks feature something I like; for instance, the slow, 'dirgy' sounding intro song, 'Diggin' for Ghosts', is one of my favorite tracks simply because it is edgy, deep, and dark. It's lyrically tight, just as all the songs are. The drum intro on 'Excommunicated', pounds my skull into a pulp, and well, I am just happy about it! 'Suicide Tuesday' gets me rockin' hard in the car, and I love to scream along to this! It's fast and heavy, and kinda danceable! {In a head-bangin' way!} Tairrie gets into the low, throat-gnawing mode for 'Eyes Black', which is a serious song, and is very personal to her, and should be to all women!

And of course, since I tend to refer to Mrs. Murphy, as the 'Female Rollins', I have to give her and Mick mega-kudos for the awesome job they did on the Rollins Band cover of 'Turned Out'! Tairrie snarls and screams her way through that song like a champ! Like I said on another review of this same album; Hank would be proud... Those are just a few of the gems here that I listed, but every track is so well done, it is hard to pick a favorite!

This is an excellent album, by an extremely underrated band, and you really won't be disappointed if you buy it! And you know what? Don't just buy it cause it's a 'girl' screamin'! Buy it because talent like this, just doesn't come along everyday!
{GREAT ALBUM, GUYS! I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST!!!!!!!!!}

5/5 CHECK YOUR SOUND SYSTEM FOR DEMONS!
November 7, 2010
By Jack M. Osborne (London, England)

Some one once wrote; After listening to My Ruin's "A Prayer Under Pressure of Violent Anguish" album "You actually have to check you CD Player for Blood stains".

Well, with "Ghosts and Good Stories", you actually ought to bless, baptise then exorcise your sound system because there is now a demon that lives inside of it. Perhaps the most haunting album produced yet - drowning each track thick in their deadly musicality, My Ruin have never steered far from their gut wrenching sound, that has kept them so above the masses. Where some metal bands dive straight into aggression, My Ruin's additions to the rock industry are always well thought out and as a result come off never the less aggressive but controlled.

Mixing the dark vibe of story telling with furocious, heart stopping riffs and solos, Ghosts and Good Stories remains exilerating throughout. Once again Mick Murphy lays his hands on all 3 parts of the rhythm section as previously done in 'The Brutal Language', and thank god he did! We are all aware that this album would not be the same with anyone else's hands, but his deep inside of it. It's like no other female fronted album anyone has ever made. Ghosts and Good Stories proves that our girl; Miss Tairrie B Murphy is still and always will be QUEEN B.

Although there is most certainly a chilling doom type vibe , there is still however that groovy, upbeat and even tongue in cheek statement to fill the rest of the album in songs like 'Money Shot' sung with all the attitude and conviction Tairrie holds inside, still manage to reflect My Ruin's comical side. For me this is the perfect combination of everything the band have ever done in the past. Demonic, charming, eery and fierce, but then what else would we expect from a once Gangsta Rapper turned Metal Queen, and Rock's Best Kept Secret; Mr Mick Murphy.

5/5 - My Ruin hit a metal home run with new album!

November 4, 2010
By Clint Brewer (Mt. Juliet, Tennessee USA)

The two-piece Los Angeles band My Ruin have been all about breaking with the metal status quo over their 10-year existence. Their new album "Ghosts & Good Stories" takes their DIY attitude toward heavy music a step beyond by breaking most of the accepted boundaries and conventions of the often narrow-minded metal community. The result is an album which drives and stomps effortlessly through genres, blending heavy musical style after style into an ultimately unique sound that arrives and delivers real rock in a modern musical landscape where there is far too little. Call it Murphy's New Law. Husband and wife team Tairrie B. Murphy (throat/spoken word/lyrics) and Mick Murphy (lead guitar and all other instruments) hit a heavy metal homerun with their new album.

Let's start here: Tairrie's pointed views on social issues, religious imagery and often taboo viewpoints rival anything other cultural icons offer in terms of meaning or relevance. Imagine a female Marilyn Manson or Henry Rollins. The fact that as a persona she remains a cult figure and not a cultural icon is a testament to the dim bulbs that populate desks at major record labels in New York and Los Angeles. Rollins is a good place to start and end the discussion about My Ruin. Mrs. Murphy's delivery is somewhere between a Phil Anselmo and Rollins, shifting seamlessly between guttural growls, appropriately places screams and hair-raising spoken word. The fact that she is a she makes all those things that much better. She is a unique and under recognized vocalist in a sea of fakes and wanna-bees.

Then there is Mr. Murphy, whose grasp on making modern metal simply shames the competition. This My Ruin effort is a musical turning point for the band, and the reason is simple. Murphy is now accompanying himself on drums and bass, and the results are a real improvement over previous My Ruin albums. The music he now backs his wife up with is a unique mix of modern heavy metal that would be right at home on any Ozzfest stage but shows a mix of influences that far outpaces the competition. This My Ruin album while shaking the rafters also is very musical, technically and in terms of song quality.

These songs blend the crunch of a Pantera or Ozzy with the tech metal of earlier VoiVod and the minor key riffage of Black Flag or the Descendents. Throw in a heavy dose of Randy Rhoades and maybe a little "Rocks" era Joe Perry, and you might begin to derive the underpinnings of Murphy's strong, truly original riffs and aggressive leads. He might usher in a second age of the guitar hero with a couple of more records like this one. Throw all this together and you get an album that combines today's heaviest metal with the musicality of 80s' SoCal hardcore and some of the best classic hard rock ever made. Tairrie B. comes over the top of that with a tough and effective vocal delivery that completes the package. Life is full of bad music. If you want to hear original riffs again, real songs and lyrics that actually mean something, buy this album. It should be standard issue to fans out loud music everywhere.

Terrorverlag Review!

"Tairrie B Murphy is known as a kind of Femme Fatale in the metal world for a long time. She risks a fat lip, not just because of her trade mark, the glaring red lipstick, as well as the contents of her music. As a woman, who is aware of her role in a dominated scene of men, namely the thrash- inspired, grooving metal, which is also used by some new metal, she likes to strike out with many God and Devil - side blows.

Together with her husband Mick Murphy she creates one more, what she likes to do: Namely to create a straight compression.Ghosts And Good Stories is loud, is craving for a certain amount of loudness, damn hot that whole thing. Tairrie has been always a power woman, but now it´s clear, that this marriage with their musically energy could actuate an entire atomic powerplant. The chemistry is really brilliant. At the same time it feels actually some kind of really good, aggressive sex. "

MY RUIN
'Ghosts And Good Stories'
(Tiefdruck-Musik/Audioglobe)

"After a line-up trim, Tairrie B and husband Mick Murphy get back in the studio to produce Ghosts and Good Stories in total autonomy. Responsible for all we can hear, the duo finds its strength in gloomy and claustrophobic atmospheres. The slow and oppressing pace of Diggin' for Ghosts seems purposely planned to introduce Long Dark Night and Excommunicated. Metal takes charge again, catalyzed and guided firmly. Hard rock solos are fast, variable interludes that add up to the record without overwhelming it. The singer doesn’t spare herself, exploring different techniques and settling for dynamic vocal lines between screamo and distorted. Reminiscences of the ‘90s work side to side with in-your-face rock ’n’ roll sounds. Even if immediate and straightforward, the record requires a few listens to be fully understood, although the effort made pays off in several occasions."

Metal Hammer Italy Review!

[Translated from Italian to English]

"Let's face it: the nowadays, third millennium metal-world is a terribly sexist universe and - aside the great sales of Nightwish, Arch Enemy or Lacuna Coil - the actual situation isn't far away from this sad and unfair concept. And maybe this is the one and only reason because My Ruin (the band of Tairrie B and her husband Mick Murphy) isn't actually among the "chosen ones" that sell-out big arenas and count mountains of green, tasty dollars... However, to get the real focus about My Ruin, Tairrie has come a long way through rap, nu metal, the angry Manhole, the wonderful Tura Satana, a lot of gossip and a very amazing album like it was the 2003's 'The Horror Of Beauty'.

Well, this brand new 'Ghosts and Good Stories' bring us to these old, good days with the following flavours: Pantera attitude, Sabbathesque seventies poison, dirt southern touch, hardcore pride and, last but not least, a courageous tribute to Rollins Band ('Turned Out'). So, from the opening attack of 'Diggin For Ghosts' and along other dozen tracks, My Ruin simply rules. And, for the happiness of their fans, they are back with the right dose of high-handedness packing in one of the most sincere, shouted loud, sexual and intense records of this year. Don't miss it!"

Thrash Hits Review!

"Whilst many of their contemporaries splintered and fell apart after only two albums (at best), My Ruin have held their own in a floundering industry, taken it in their stride and emerged triumphant. Ghosts and Good Stories, the sixth album from renowned LA rockers, is a dazzling reminder of why My Ruin gleaned the cult following of loyal fans since day one with the release of Speak and Destroy in 1999.

The ripping, doom-laden, stoner-drenched metal that is underpinned by driving drums on this album is accompanied by Tairrie’s smoky, sexy vocals and vitriolic screams that My Ruin are so revered for. Her husband and right-hand man Mick Murphy puts most musicians around today to shame, being responsible for playing not only the guitar parts that got him recognised as being one of the most underrated guitar players ever, but also the bass AND the drums on the entire record.

This collection of beautifully told stories that unwind and unravel before our ears has plenty of bark and a bite to match. Powerful statements such as “Every blessing ignored becomes a curse” in ‘Repose’ is reminiscent of powerhouse punk classics from bands such as Black Flag and Born Against. The dark and eerie Deathknell is close and personal enough that you can imagine sitting in a dark room filled with candles and incense watching Tairrie growl into the microphone and Mick pick out the goth-styled riff on his guitar only a metre away. The power to hold the listeners attention and transport them to a different place is something that My Ruin have always done well, but with tracks such as the spiralling ‘La Ciudad’ and stifling opener ‘Diggin For Ghosts’ it has never felt so real.

‘Abusing the Muse’ is a journey into the depths of the bowels of hell that sees Tairrie exercising her demon-like scream to the full extent to the backing of Mick’s instantly recognisable way of playing guitar that smacks of swagger and brutality. Kinned with Excommunicated and Eyes Black, it’s these tracks which really demonstrate that My Ruin really are as solid and staunch as most bands can only dream of being.Ghosts and Good Stories is an onslaught from start to finish that doesn’t let up; there’s no room for fluff, no room for floundering and certainly no room for questions. My Ruin are pioneers of their own brand of metal that amalgamates so many different styles it can’t be pigeonholed or categorised and in a world where genre-labelling is over-worked it’s a very welcome repose to have an album that stands on its own like all true, previously-released, now classic and much-lauded albums did before it."

Classic Rock Magazine Review!

Return of the Killer B!

"My Ruin frontwoman Tairrie B doesn’t so much open her heart to you as rip it still beating from a gaping wound in her chest before forcing the bloody mess down your throat. While her partner Mick Murphy provides the frantic, doomy, metallic backbone to their music, but it’s B’s bloodletting howl, visceral fury and hair tearing emotional outpouring that has always, and still does, give My Ruin their razorblade of an edge.

As ever, rich and bloody Catholic imagery clashes explosively with nihilistic, non-believing despair. Her raw screams rail against the vapid pursuit of celebrity (Money Shot) and the physical and moral decay of Los Angeles (La Cuidad) before she turns her fury on herself in the confessional Suicide Tuesday, finding hope and light amongst the bleakness with the line “Tuesday feels like suicide but I just want to live”. Ghosts And Good Stories may well be the most intense experience of the year."

Detritus Magazine Review!

"The divine Tairrie B and multi-instrumentalist maestro Mick Murphy are one hell of a hard rock/heavy metal duo. Together the pair are the blood, sweat and tears- the unholy embodiment that is My Ruin. If you’ve never heard of them, then you haven’t been diligent in your underground digging. My Ruin was born of the “Patron Saint of Blasphemy”- the one and only, Miss Tairrie B back in 1999. And now, ten years later, through hell and high water, they have proven to be not only alive- but resilient as ever. GHOSTS & GOOD STORIES is their sixth studio album, which has received raving reviews so far, and is about to get another one with this review. My Ruin is not your everyday typical metal band. They are a band rooted in rock n’ roll, yet also have been baptized in the brimstone of the devilishly wicked underworld of heavy metal. Tairrie is all over the vocal spectrum- she shreds and screams with utmost ferocity, giving metal elites a run for their money. And then she brings us back down into a somber chasm, where her harrowing spoken-word style pierces you through the heart, communicates to your soul, and chills you to the bone.

Mick Murphy impressively plays every instrument on the album-the drums, bass and guitar. The man must live and breathe music, because the album is put together so seamlessly and professionally. GHOSTS & GOOD STOIRES is christened by the opening track, “Diggin’ For Ghosts,” which, with the first stroke of the guitar, surges into a bleak, yet menacing abyss. As the guitars squeal with their eerie charm, the hair raises on the back of your neck. The drums sonorously pound in, and then Tairrie’s steely voice slithers in, sounding layered in half a ghostly whisper, half venomous spoken word. My Ruin has a penchant for penning lyrics anointed with religious terminology, and “Diggin for Ghosts” is on par with that. “Tie the wires around my head, pound the nails into my flesh and I’m bleeding again,” Tairrie declares in a spellbinding and sultry tone. “Long Dark Night” catapults us out of the melancholy milieu that we wallowed in during, “Diggin for Ghosts.” “Long Dark Night” wreaks rock n’ roll havoc, ignited with the inextinguishable fury of Tairrie’s scathing vocals.

“Eyes Black” was a particular favorite of mine. It’s an unrelenting attack on Islam and sheds the light of truth on how inhumanely women are treated. The lyrics epitomize Tairrie’s pride in being the most blasphemous girl around. The following track, “Money Shot,” reviles young women who are more preoccupied with sex appeal than striving to have substance or self-respect. The opening line, “Get ready to shoot yourself” summarily says it all. The drumming blazes and thrashes, perpetuating a steady beat and keeping it catchy. “La Ciudad” dazzles as it follows the electric current of the guitar. Fusing smoldering spoken word pieces with damning death growls, the song exposes Hollywood for the gilded city it is. Miss B desecrates its highly revered status, as the cheap, gold exterior chips away. “Suicide Tuesday” is wrought with palpable guitar work worthy of worship. Tairrie cuts like a searing knife, shrieking out her lungs in raw passion. “Saviorself,” is replete with Tairrie’s trademark “anti-pious poetry.”

“Turned Out” is My Ruin’s tribute to the Rollins Band. This is another cover song in a string of several that the band has recorded as of late. The album draws to a close with “Deathknell,” which is inked with emotion and pensive acrimony. It’s a personal reflection, which shows that even though they have endured turbulent tides, My Ruin have persevered through it all, and they will continue to do so. Every song on GHOSTS & GOOD STORIES brings something new. Tairrie shatters the proverbial glass ceiling with an assassin’s tongue, chastising many of society’s ugly features and Mick complements it by creating a profusion of musical pizzazz. It’s an album that demands your attention and keeps you fully engaged from start to finish. Amen to that! "

TNR Review!

"Misogyny. Politics. Religion. Sexism. Vanity. Misanthropy. It’s all in My Ruin’s sixth full length album, Ghosts and Good Stories. And true to form, vocalist Tairrie B. (Murphy) is at the helm, leading the revolution with her brutal assault. To understand My Ruin you have to understand frontwoman Tairrie B.’s history. You’d be hard pressed to find a current female metal vocalist that doesn’t list Tairrie B. as an influence. And when I say female vocalists, I’m not talking about that Epica and Nightwish operatic crap either. I’m talking about metaphorical balls to-the-wall, blood curdling vocals that sound as though they originated in the pits of hell.

I was introduced to My Ruin through their second full length album, A Prayer Under Pressure Of Violent Anguish, and was simply floored by Tairrie B’s raw aggressiveness. Her career spans over two decades; from her days starting out as a solo rapper (yeah, that’s right), to forming Manhole/Tura Satana in 1993 and finally My Ruin in 1999. She’s a music industry veteran that has done it all, and has blazed paths for so many female vocalists since, it feels unfair to draw any comparisons. So I won’t even bother.

The current incarnation of My Ruin is that of a two piece- Tairrie B. on vocals and her (now) husband Mick Murphy fulfilling guitar, bass and drum duties. The result of this refined lineup is a fairly concise album to evidence a clear and focused vision. In true Tairrie B. form, Ghosts and Good Stories provides copious amounts of spoken word upheld by ferocious, throaty verbal assaults. Forget the indulgent, operatic vocals and clean singing from most female metal vocalists these days, because you’ll get none of that here.

“Diggin’ for Ghosts” starts the album out with down tempo, sludgy riffs and spoken word. “Long Dark Night” comes blazing out of Hell’s Gates in a successful act of redemption, and serves as one of the album’s strongest tracks. Immediately following is another of the album’s highlights, “Excommunicated”. Tairrie B. really shines while screeching the lyrics “In a world that makes me sick, I will be your heretic.” just before the song slows back down into more fuzzy, distorted Southern-style guitar riffs. “Eyes Black” addresses the issue of women being forced to cover their faces in the name of religion, and is done so with unrelenting gutturals and lyrical attacks.” Money Shot” is quite an interesting song. Simply put, it lambastes women who are willing to take their clothes off for fame.

“Abusing the Muse” is another of my favorite tracks from the album. It features a hook that will resonate with you for hours after the song is over. It’s drenched with more heavy, distorted guitars and ruthless, throaty vocals as Tairrie unflinchingly confronts modern religion. “Turned Out” is a cover of the Rollins Band classic as only My Ruin can do it. Immediately following is the album’s closing track, “Deathknell”, which is primarily driven by spoken word. It’s doom-laden, haunting, and eerily captivating. If you’re looking for an album that oozes anger, misanthropy and aggression without apologies, you’ve certainly found it!

Metal Hammer Review!

THE DIVINE MS B COMES BACK ROARING UNDER THE RADAR AND PROUDLY AGAINST THE GRAIN!
"My Ruin have mutated into something truly monstrous in recent years, as the chemistry between Tairrie B and Mick Murphy has evolved and sprouted wicked wings. Ghosts And Good Stories picks up where 2008’s Throat Full Of Heart left off, with an exhilarating barrage of warped stoner metal riffs and blister-razing gutter-punk that lurches from harrowing, slow-motion menace (Diggin’ For Ghosts) to floored-accelerator sludgecore (Long Dark Night); the whole scabrous din held together by its creators’ unswerving passion. Easily the filthiest, heaviest and most exciting thing that Tairrie has put her scream to, this may not reach anyone beyond My Ruin’s die-hard following, but wildly infectious hymns to rage like instant sing-along Money Shot could incite a riot in a Buddhist temple."

Planet-Loud.Com Review!

"There is no middle ground when it comes to My Ruin. Everyone has their opinion – some love them, some hate them but, whatever your feelings, there is no denying that when Tairrie Murphy and her now husband Mick Murphy connect in a recording studio, something very special happens. After eighteen months locked away then, it comes as no surprise that their latest offering, Ghosts And Good Stories, sees the pair create a piece of work as powerful as fans have come to expect.

Followers of the band will note that, over the years, there has been a gradual power shift in the My Ruin camp with Mick Murphy joining Tairrie as a main player in defining the My Ruin sound. Whereas the early days saw the line-up rotated with each album/tour, it came as no coincidence that the sound became more settled and defined as Murphy’s signature guitar sound became more of an integral element of the My Ruin sound. As is the norm now, wailing Sabbathy riffs and Down-esque grinding metal pepper the material the pair have created with head-pounders like Malediction best summed up as loud and riffy as fuck. Of course, it’s impossible to ignore vocalist Tairrie Murphy as well who, having spent the last eighteen months of her life experiencing the spectrum of personal highs and lows, delivers a 100% throat-shredding performance yet again leaving most male-vocalists for dust even when, on the likes of Suicide Tuesday, she intertwines her much loved spoken-word inspiration into the work.

With a title like Ghosts And Good Stories, try and avoid listening to this album in a dark room but do listen to it with the stereo cranked up to an ear-bleeding volume. However you choose to listen to this marvelous piece of work, be warned, by the time the haunting Deathknell brings the curtain down on this album, you’ll have just spent the last hour experiencing the true beauty of horror.
